Mounjaro is a once-weekly injectable pen that contains tirzepatide, a medicine shown to support weight loss by helping regulate blood sugar and reduce appetite. Clinical trials have reported up to 20% body weight reduction over 18 months. It may also be prescribed to adults with type 2 diabetes as part of an overall plan to improve metabolic health.

Mounjaro is a cold-chain medication and must be stored in the fridge (2°C to 8°C). It can be kept out of the fridge for up to 21 days, provided the temperature stays below 30°C.

We also offer alternative weight loss treatments such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide), as well as the diabetes treatment Ozempic (semaglutide).

Please Note: Due to high demand, some patients may experience a delay when ordering Mounjaro. If your order is showing as 'on-hold' this means we are currently waiting for stock to arrive. Thank you for your patience.

Mounjaro for Weight Loss and Type 2 Diabetes: A Doctor’s Explanation

Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) - GMC Number 8085739

GP and surgeon Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) explains that "Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes and can also be prescribed to support weight loss. It works by activating GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which are natural hormones that help control appetite and blood sugar".

If you feel this treatment may be suitable for you, you can begin an online consultation. A registered prescriber will review your information and decide whether it is clinically appropriate. If prescribed, your medication can be delivered straight to your home with a choice of delivery and payment options. What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection used for type 2 diabetes and weight loss. It helps regulate blood sugar, reduces appetite and lowers cravings when used alongside a balanced diet and regular activity.

Who is eligible for Mounjaro?

Eligibility Criteria To Buy Mounjaro In The UK

Mounjaro is usually prescribed for adults who meet specific BMI criteria:

  • BMI of 30 or above
  • BMI of 27 or above with a related health condition, such as:
    • Prediabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Heart disease

A healthcare professional will confirm whether this treatment is right for you. For a full overview, visit our Beginner's Guide to Mounjaro.

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. These hormones help control appetite and stabilise blood sugar.

  • GLP-1: Helps reduce hunger and supports blood sugar control.
  • GIP: Improves insulin response and appetite regulation.

How Mounjaro supports weight loss

How Does Mounjaro Work For Weight Loss
  • Regulates blood sugar to control cravings
  • Suppresses appetite by mimicking natural fullness hormones
  • Slows digestion so you feel full for longer
  • Helps the body maintain better energy balance

Mounjaro’s dual-action mechanism makes it more effective for weight loss than GLP-1-only medicines such as Wegovy and Ozempic (Nauck & D'Alessio, 2022).

How long does Mounjaro take to work?

Mounjaro begins working straight away, but many people notice appetite changes and better blood sugar control after a few weeks. Best results come from consistent use combined with lifestyle changes.

Mounjaro Weight Loss Results: What Clinical Studies Show

Clinical evidence shows that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can support significant, long-term weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle habits. Studies suggest that people may lose up to 22.5 percent of their body weight over a 72-week period, with many noticing early changes within 4 to 6 weeks.

Real-World Results from Clinical Trials

One major study followed 2,539 adults who received either a placebo or Mounjaro doses of 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg once weekly for 72 weeks. Everyone began with 2.5 mg weekly for the first four weeks, during which average weight loss was around 3 percent.

When the dose increased to 5 mg in weeks 5 to 8, most participants had lost 5 to 6 percent of their starting weight. By week 12, those on doses between 5 mg and 7.5 mg had reached around 8 percent average weight loss.

Long-Term Weight Loss Potential

Longer studies, including the SURMOUNT-1 trial, found weight reductions of up to 22.5 percent in adults without diabetes. Additional research shows:

  • 15.7 percent average weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes (Eli Lilly, 2023)
  • 20 percent average weight loss across broader populations over 18 months (Singh, 2024)

Some trials show that Mounjaro may be up to six times more effective than diet and exercise alone, with high doses achieving:

  • 20.9 percent reduction in body weight within 36 weeks
  • 25.3 percent reduction within 88 weeks (Aronne et al., 2023)

What to Expect During Treatment

Mounjaro is designed for steady weight management rather than rapid changes. Results vary because everyone responds differently. Some people notice early appetite reduction, while others progress gradually as their dose increases.

If you are not seeing expected results, speak to your prescriber and read our guide: Why Am I Not Losing Weight on Mounjaro?

What People in the UK Say About Mounjaro

Important Mounjaro Pricing Update

Below is a clear explanation of the recent price increase, why it has happened and what options are available to you.

Why Has the Price Increased?

Eli Lilly increased the price charged to UK providers. Earlier stock bought at the lower price was used for past orders, but new deliveries cost more. Pricing has been updated to reflect this.

Why Did Prices Change Before 1 September?

In August 2025, Eli Lilly limited how much stock could be purchased at the old price. High demand meant this allocation was used quickly. New stock is now supplied at the higher price.

If You Ordered Before the Increase

  • Your original price will still be honoured as long as your consultation is approved.
  • If you see a refund pending, your order will still be processed at your agreed price.

Are All Treatments Affected?

No. Only Mounjaro prices have changed. Other treatment prices remain the same.

Will Prices Go Back Down?

Future pricing cannot be predicted and the new costs are expected to remain.

Your Options if Mounjaro Is Now Too Expensive

  • Stay on a lower dose if it continues to work well for you.
  • Consider a lower dose that may cost less. Read more about the dosing schedule: Mounjaro dosing.
  • Explore alternatives such as Wegovy if suitable for you.
  • Use flexible payment options including PayPal, Google Pay, Visa Electron, debit and credit card.

Can Discounts Be Offered?

Discounts are limited because the increase originates from the manufacturer. Promotions may still run where possible.

Switching Between Mounjaro and Wegovy

Can You Switch Directly from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes. You should leave a 7-day gap between your last Mounjaro dose and your first Wegovy dose. Your starting Wegovy dose will depend on your previous treatment and will be set by a prescriber.

Dose Comparison Chart

Your clinician will confirm the safest dose, but the table below shows a typical transition plan.

Current Mounjaro weekly dose (mg)Starting Wegovy weekly dose (mg)
2.50.25
50.5
7.51.0
10–151.7

A prescriber will confirm the correct starting dose before any order is approved. For a simple breakdown, see our guide: How to switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy.

Will You See Similar Results After Switching?

Mounjaro and Wegovy work differently, so their dose numbers are not directly comparable. Results depend on using the right medicine at a suitable dose under clinical supervision. Many people find Wegovy effective for ongoing weight management.

Why Is a Washout Period Needed?

The 7-day gap reduces the risk of side effects by preventing overlapping activity.

Can You Switch Mid-Cycle?

Yes, if clinically appropriate. Do not use both medicines at the same time and always leave a full 7 days between injections.

Side Effects

Like all prescription medicines, Mounjaro (tirzepatide) can cause side effects. Most are mild and improve as your body adjusts, but some can be more serious. Knowing what to expect helps you use the treatment safely and with confidence.

A Pharmacist’s Overview of Mounjaro Side Effects

Monalisa Kapinga - Pharmacist and Clinical Safety Officer - GPhC Number 2232744

Independent pharmacist and Clinical Safety Officer Monalisa Kapinga explains the most common side effects and how to manage them:

"Mounjaro may cause digestive, metabolic and general side effects, especially during the early weeks of treatment. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation are among the most common changes. Eating smaller meals, avoiding rich or spicy foods and staying hydrated can help. Burping or stomach discomfort may improve by eating slowly and avoiding fizzy drinks.

Feeling tired or dizzy is common at first and usually settles. Rest, hydration and balanced meals can help. Low blood pressure may cause head rush or faintness, so monitoring is important.

Loss of appetite and weight loss may be more noticeable in people with diabetes and should be reviewed if excessive. Hair thinning can occur with rapid weight loss but is usually temporary.

Changes in taste can be eased with lozenges or mints. People using insulin or sulfonylureas should monitor for low blood sugar and keep glucose tablets nearby.

Seek urgent medical help if you experience signs of gallbladder issues, severe abdominal pain or vomiting, which may indicate pancreatitis. A rash, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, or breathing difficulty may suggest an allergic reaction. Stop Mounjaro and seek emergency care if this happens."
