Do gloves protect you from coronavirus?

As everyone works hard to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect themselves and their loved ones from infection, people are looking for ways to strengthen that protection. There are a number of ways that this can be done, like wearing face masks, using hand sanitiser and regularly cleaning surfaces. But are gloves an effective way to protect against coronavirus?

Do gloves protect you from coronavirus?

No form of protection is perfect and nothing can guarantee you won’t catch coronavirus. However, disposable gloves are a good way to slow the spread of germs when you’re out in a public place as they can make you more aware of what you’re touching and can prevent you from touching your face or hair.

This offers you protection as coronavirus is spread through infected droplets released during a cough or sneeze, which is then inhaled by other people. Sometimes this happens with a step in between, as infected droplets can land on surfaces and then be picked up and inhaled by other people.

The role that disposable gloves play in protecting against this is to make the user more aware of the things they’re touching and to stop them from touching their face. Any infected droplets picked up are therefore less likely to make their way into the respiratory system.

In order for gloves to offer you protection again COVID-19 it’s important that they fit correctly, and to remove and dispose of them properly. You can buy disposable gloves from UK Meds for £9.99 for a box of 100 gloves.

    How to remove gloves properly

Once you’ve completed the task you’re using the gloves for, it’s important to remove them properly. If you require gloves for more than one task then you should safely remove them after the first, and replace them with a new pair.

To remove the gloves, pinch the outside of the glove on the inside of the wrist. Peel downwards, turning the glove inside it, until it’s off your hand and then hold onto the removed glove with your still-gloved hand.

With your bare hand, slide your finger under the wrist of the glove on your other hand, taking care not to touch the outside of the glove. Then peel this away from the hand, turning it inside out as you go, and go over the glove you are already holding so that one is contained within the other.

Once both gloves have been removed and are inside out, dispose of these safely. It’s important to follow all guidance on removing and disposing of gloves after use, to ensure you do not accidentally touch the potentially contaminated parts.
