What does Metronidazole treat?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic medication used in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. It works by preventing the growth of the bacteria and then clearing the symptoms that it causes.

What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

Bacterial vaginosis, as the name suggests, is a bacterial infection that affects women. Because it’s caused by a bacteria (rather than a virus or fungus), it’s easily treatable with antibiotics, such as Metronidazole.

What are the symptoms of BV?

The main symptom of bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a foul-smelling vaginal discharge that is often described as having a fishy odour. This is usually thin and watery in consistency and white, clear, green or grey in colour.

It can also cause itching in and around the vagina, or a burning sensation when peeing. BV is the most common cause of an unusual vaginal discharge but it’s not the only cause, with Thrush and sexually transmitted infections also being possibilities. That’s why it’s important to get any new or strange discharge checked out.

However, around 50% of women who have bacterial vaginosis will experience no symptoms at all, so they may go for a long time without realising they have it.

What causes BV?

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by a change to the delicate balance of bacteria in your vagina. All women have lots of bacteria in their vagina, which usually cause no problems. But there are plenty of triggers which can throw things off and cause BV symptoms.

Sex is a major trigger of BV, especially if you’ve recently had a new partner or if you have had multiple different partners. However, it’s not a sexually transmitted infection. This is because sex can disturb the natural bacterial balance, rather than sex being a way to acquire the bacteria from another person.

Other common triggers include douching, using perfumed products around your vagina or having an IUD fitted. Essentially, anything that introduces a foreign substance around your vagina can run the risk of upsetting the natural balance down there.

How do I use Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is a prescription-only medication, which means you’ll first need to have a confirmed case of bacterial vaginosis in order to be prescribed the medication. Metronidazole is usually a one week course of antibiotics. You may find that symptoms begin to clear (or could have disappeared completely) after only a couple of days of tablets. But like any antibiotic, it’s important to complete the entire course to ensure the bacteria is cleared.

You will need to take two tablets a day, by swallowing them whole with a glass of water. Many women complain that Metronidazole has a very strong metallic or sour taste that can make the finishing the course of antibiotics very unpleasant. You could try taking them with milk or juice to make them slightly more palatable.
