More Information

Janumet is a combination of two medications, which when used a proper diet and exercise program will control high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes patients.

Janumet is a combination of oral biguanide, metformin, and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV inhibitor or sitagliptin. The combination medicine is used to treat type 2 diabetes when treatment with one antidiabetic agent alone does not result in adequate control.

It is also used when switching from metformin plus sitagliptin as separate tablets to the single, combination tablet.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Janumet patient information leaflet.

Janumet contains metformin and sitagliptin. Sitagliptin works by increasing the levels of incretins that help control blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin, especially after a meal. Incretins also decrease the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

Metformin helps to restore your body’s proper response to the insulin that your body produces naturally. It also decreases the amount of sugar that your liver produces that your stomach and intestines absorb.

Controlling high blood sugar in diabetic type 2 patients prevent kidney disease, nerve problems, blindness, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or a stroke.

The benefits of Janumet, which is a combination of metformin and sitagliptin are the following:

    • It increases the production of incretins that help control blood sugar levels.
    • It decreases the amount of sugar produced by the liver.
    • It helps prevents complications of type 2 diabetes.

Read the medication guide that comes with the package of the product before you start using Janumet, and each time you get a refill of the medication.

Take Janumet by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually two times a day with meals. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Janumet unless your doctor will stop you from doing so.  Do not split, break, or cut the tablet before taking it.

The dosage of Janumet is based on your medical condition, your response to the treatment and other medications you may be taking. Your doctor may ask you to start Janumet at a low dose to minimize the risk of side effects, and gradually increase the dose as you get used to it. Always follow the directions of your doctor.

Take Janumet regularly in order to get the most benefits from it. As much as possible, take it at the same time each day.

If you are already taking another diabetes medication, follow the instructions of your doctor on how to use Janumet together with the other diabetic medication.

Check your blood sugar regularly as directed by your doctor. Share the results with your doctor who will make adjustments to your dose when necessary.

The usual dose of Janumet is two tablets taken twice a day, one in the morning and another in the evening. Your doctor may change your dose depending on how you respond to the medication and other conditions that may arise.

Your doctor prescribed Janumet because he believes that the benefits to you are greater than the risk of side effects. Many individuals who use Janumet do not experience the serious side effects.

Janumet usually causes hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It may occur if Janumet is prescribed with other diabetes medication. Seek the advice of your doctor if there is a need to stop or lower the dose of the other diabetes medication you are taking.

Low blood sugar has the following symptoms: fast heartbeat, shaking, blurred vision, hunger, dizziness, or tingling of the hands or feet. If you experience low blood sugar often, it is advisable that you always carry with you glucose tablets.  Drinking alcoholic drinks may contribute to the low blood sugar level.

High blood sugar or hyperglycemia has the following symptoms: increased urination, thirst, drowsiness, confusion, rapid breathing, flushing, and fruity breath odour. If these symptoms occur, report it to your doctor immediately.

Get emergency medical help if you have very serious side effects such as pancreatitis, severe stomach or abdominal pain or back pain, and lactic acidosis.

A very serious reaction to Janumet is rare. However, get medical help immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms of an allergic reaction: rash, itching or swelling of the face/tongue/throat, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness.

Before taking Janumet, tell your doctor if you are allergic to metformin or sitagliptin, or if you have forms of allergy. The inactive ingredients of Janumet may trigger an allergic reaction.

Tell your doctor your medical history before you start taking Janumet. Before you undergo a surgical procedure or an X-ray that uses iodinated contrast, tell your healthcare professional about the medications that you are using. You may have to stop using any of them until the procedure is over.

When you have hypoglycemia, you may experience blurred vision or dizziness. Do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery or perform any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure that you can perform the activities.

Limit your alcohol consumption because it may contribute to hypoglycemia.

It is harder to control your blood sugar when you are under stress. Consult your doctor about the possible change in your treatment plan if you know that you will be in a situation where you will be exposed to stress, such as undergoing surgery.

Janumet should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor if you are pregnant. Your doctor may direct you to take insulin during your pregnancy.

Metformin passes into breast milk at a small amount. It is not known if sitagliptin will pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before you start breastfeeding.

Drug interactions may change how your medications work or it may increase the risk of serious side effects. Share with your doctor a list of all the medications you are currently taking in order for him to determine if any one of them will interact with Janumet. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medication without consulting first with your doctor because many medications can affect your blood sugar, making it harder to control.

You can safely buy Janumet online at UK Meds. You will need to have first an online consultation with a pharmacist independent prescriber before your order will be supplied. The online consultation will ensure that Janumet is the right medication for your medical condition.
