More Information

Logynon tablets are hormonal contraceptive pills. They are combined contraceptive pills that are made up of two active ingredients: ethynylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen, and levonorgestrel, a synthetic progesterone.

Taking Logynon results in lighter, more regular, and less painful menstrual bleeding. This medication is at times prescribed for women who have problems with painful, heavy or irregular periods.

Logynon tablets contain the synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone, naturally occurring female sex hormones. Combined oral contraceptives such as Logynon work by over-riding the normal menstrual cycle. During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the levels of sex hormone change throughout each month. The hormones cause the ovaries to release an egg during the process of ovulation and prepare the lining of the womb for the possibility of a pregnancy. At the end of each menstrual cycle, the levels of the hormones fall if the egg has not been fertilized, causing the shedding of the womb lining as a monthly menstrual period.

The daily dose of hormones provided by the pill works mainly by convincing the body into believing that ovulation already occurred. This prevents the ripening and the subsequent release of an egg from the ovaries each month.

The hormones also thicken the natural mucus at the womb’s neck, making it difficult for sperm to cross from the vaginal canal into the womb and reach an egg to be fertilized. The hormones also change the quality of the lining of the womb, making it not conducive for the implantation of a fertilized egg.

Logynon is beneficial in preventing pregnancy. The medication contains synthetic estrogen and progesterone which tricks the body into believing that ovulation has occurred, preventing the ripening and the subsequent release of an egg from the ovaries. Even if an egg is fertilized and released by the ovaries, Logynon is effective in increasing the thickness of the natural mucus at the womb’s neck, making it difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb.

Logynon Pill

Logynon is a triphasic pill with the 21 day pack containing three types of tablets, each with a slightly different dose of hormones in it. There are six light brown tablets that contain 30 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 50 micrograms levonorgestrel, the five white tablets contain 40 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 75 micrograms levonorgestrel, and the ten ochre tablets that contain 30 micrograms ethynylestradiol and 125 micrograms levonorgestrel.

The tablets in a Logynon pack must be taken in the order specified on the pack. You should start with the light brown tablets marked ‘1’. One tablet is taken is to be taken every day for 21 days and there will be a seven day break from pill-taking. During this break, the levels of hormones in the blood drop, resulting in a withdrawal bleed that is similar to a normal menstrual period. You should start taking the next pack the next day immediately following the seven pill-free days are up, whether you are still bleeding or not.

You are still protected against pregnancy even during your pill-free week as long as you took the 21 pills correctly and that you started taking the pack on time.

You will help remember to take your dose if you take the pill at the same time every day. Each tablet is to be taken by mouth, swallowed whole with a drink. You can take the pill with or without a meal.

You don’t have to use any other method of contraception while you are taking Logynon. If you have a very short menstrual cycle, you will not be protected from pregnancy if you will start taking the pills on the fifth day of your period.

You can start taking this pill at any time during your cycle if the doctor is reasonably convinced that you are not pregnant. Starting the pill at any other time in your cycle will not protect you from pregnancy. You might need to use other forms of contraception, such as the condom for the first seven days of taking the pill.

If you have given birth and you are not breastfeeding, you can start taking the pill on the 21st day after giving birth. Use extra contraception such as a condom for the first seven days.

Start taking the pill immediately after a miscarriage or abortion at under 24 weeks will immediately provide you protection against pregnancy. If you start taking the pill more than seven days after a miscarriage or abortion, you should use extra contraception for the seven days of taking the pills.

If you forget to take a pill, or start the pack of pills one day later, take the missed pill as soon as you remember even if you have to take two pills at the same time. Then continue taking the rest of the pack as scheduled. You are still protected from pregnancy and you don’t have to use extra contraception.

If you forget to take two pills or you start the new pack two or more days late, you will not be protected against pregnancy. Take the last pill that you missed together with the pill for the day, which means that you have to take two pills. Forget about the other pill that you missed. Then continue taking the rest of the pills in the pack as scheduled. You should not have sex or use an extra barrier method of contraception such as condoms.

If you have less than seven pills remaining in the pack after your last missed pill, finish the pack and start a new pack straight away without taking the seven day pill-free days.

If you vomit within two hours of taking a pill, the medicine may not be fully absorbed into the bloodstream. Take another pill as soon as you feel better and take the next pill at your usual time. You will still be protected against pregnancy.

Logynon will not protect you against sexually transmitted infections. You need to use condoms for protection against sexually transmitted infections.

Women who are using Logynon for the first time may experience irregularity in menstruation such as spotting, breakthrough bleeding or missed period. Consult your doctor if you experience persistent bleeding. If you don’t have a withdrawal bleed for two consecutive months, use a pregnancy test before you start the next month’s contraceptive cycle.

One Logynon tablet should be taken daily for twenty-one days then rest for seven days before starting a new pack.

Medicines and their possible side effects affect individual users differently. Not everyone who uses Logynon will experience the possible side effects.

The following are the possible side effects of Logynon:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache or migraine
  • Weight changes
  • Breast enlargement or tenderness
  • Water retention
  • Vaginal thrush
  • Change in menstrual bleeding

Logynon should not be used by women with certain medical conditions. Check first with your doctor if it is safe for you to take this medication. It should be used with caution by women who are over 35 years of age or those with a family history of stroke, heart attack, or blood clot. It should also be used with caution by women with certain medical conditions. Check first with your doctor if you need extra monitoring while you are taking Logynon.

Logynon is used to prevent pregnancy and should not be used during pregnancy. If you think you could be pregnant while taking the pills, stop taking the pills and consult your doctor right away.

The hormones in Logynon can cause a reduction in the production of breast milk. It is recommended that breastfeeding women not use Logynon until after weaning.

It is necessary that you share with your doctor a list of all the medications you are currently taking or have recently taken before you start taking Logynon. Similarly, check with your doctor before you start taking a new medication while you are taking Logynon. This is to make sure that the combination of drugs will be safe.
