Maxalt helps to relieve a headache, pain, and other symptoms of a migraine, including vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to light or sound.  Prompt treatment helps a person return to normal routine, decreasing the need for other pain medications.

Maxalt does not prevent future migraines or lessen migraine attacks.

Maxalt works by binding with 5-HT1B/1D receptors on blood vessels in the brain. It constricts or narrows the blood vessels in the brainstem. It reduces the inflammatory substances in the body that trigger head pain, nausea, and sensitivity to sound or light, and other migraine symptoms. Maxalt works best when taken as soon as migraine symptoms begin to appear.

The main benefit of taking Maxalt is the relief of the symptoms of a migraine headache. It effectively helps a person return to the normal routine without the need to take other pain medications.

Maxalt Tablets

Maxalt is available in tablet form. There is a tablet that can be swallowed and there is the orally disintegrating tablet that dissolves on the tongue. The orally disintegrating tablet is appealing to people with difficulty swallowing pills.

It is best to take Maxalt at the onset of a migraine when it is most effective.

Take Maxalt by mouth as directed by your doctor at the first sign of a migraine. It may be taken with a meal but it works faster when taken on an empty stomach. The dosage of this medication is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, age, and the other drugs you may be taking. The dosage for children is based on body weight. Tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking before you start taking Maxalt.

If you do not observe any improvements in your symptoms, do not take more doses of Maxalt. Talk to your doctor immediately. If your symptoms are partly relieved, or if your headache comes back, you may take another dose two hours after you took the last dose. Children should not be administered more than one dose, or 5 mg in a 24-hour period. The maximum dose for an adult is 30 mg in a 24-hour period.

Your doctor may perform a heart exam before you are prescribed this medicine if you have a higher risk of heart problems. Your doctor may direct you to take the first dose of this medicine in the office or clinic to minor you for serious side effects.

Using drugs for migraine attacks on 10 more days each month may make your headaches worse. Do not use the medication more often or for longer than directed.

Adults are usually instructed to take a 5 mg or 10 mg single dose of Maxalt, with repeat doses separated by at least 2 hours. The maximum dose for an adult is 30 mg in a 24-hour period.

Get medical help right away if you experience these or other serious side effects such as fast or irregular heartbeat, severe stomach or abdominal pain, fainting, bloody diarrhoea, or signs of a stroke.

Maxalt rarely causes a very serious allergic reaction. However, get medical help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, severe dizziness, itching or swelling of the face/tongue/throat, or trouble breathing.

Certain conditions can increase your risk for heart problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, overweight, smoker, postmenopausal, or if you are a man who is over 40 years old.

Maxalt may make you drowsy or dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana use can make it worse. Do not drive, operate machinery, or perform any other task that requires alertness until you are sure that you can do it safely. Talk to your doctor if you are a marijuana user.
