More Information

Domperidone is a medicine that increases the contractions or movements of the stomach and bowel. It is used to treat vomiting and nausea caused by drugs that treat Parkinson’s disease.

Domperidone is to be given only by or under the immediate supervision of your doctor. This medicine is available in tablet or suspension.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Domperidone patient information leaflet.

Domperidone is an antiemetic and a prokinetic medicine. It works by blocking the action of a chemical messenger in the brain, which causes the feeling of nausea and vomiting, as well as increasing the movement or contractions of the stomach and intestines to allow food to move more easily through the stomach.

Domperidone improves the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, bloating, and the feeling of fullness. It is effective in preventing stomach problems associated with certain medications for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Take Domperidone by mouth as prescribed usually 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Do not increase your dose or take more than what is directed by your doctor. Taking this medication in higher doses or more frequent than what your doctor recommends will not improve your condition any faster but the risk of side effects will increase.

The dose of Domperidone will be different for different patients. You should follow your doctor’s order or the directions on the prescription label.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. The number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depends on the medical problem that is being treated.

The oral dosage of the tablet form of Domperidone is as follows:

For the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders –

  • Adults – 10 mg three to four times daily. Some patients may require higher doses up to 20 mg three to four times daily.

For nausea and vomiting –

  • Adults – 20 mg three to four times daily.

If you miss a dose of Domperidone, take the missed dose as soon as possible. However, if it is almost the time for the next dose, just skip the missed dose. Do not double the doses.

If overdose of Domperidone is suspected, contact your local poison control centre or go to an emergency room immediately.

Along with the needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Not everyone who uses the medication may experience all of the side effects. If the side effects do occur, they may need medical attention.

The following are the symptoms of an overdose:

  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Dizziness
  • Disorientation
  • Fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Lightheadedness
  • Loss of balance or muscle control

See your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

Less common –

  • Loss of muscle control of balance
  • Swelling of the mouth

Rare –

  • Fast, irregular, pounding, or racing heartbeat or pulse
  • Swelling of the face, hands, lower legs, or feet.

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. The side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Your doctor may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of the side effects. Check with your doctor if any of the following side effects will persist or become bothersome, or if you have any questions about them:

Less common –

  • Breast milk flowing from the nipple
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Swelling of the breast in male
  • Hot flashes
  • Itching of the skin
  • Itching, redness, pain, or swelling of the eye
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Pain in the breast

Rare –

  • Change in need to urinate
  • Constipation
  • Change in appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Burning, difficult, or painful urination
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness

  • Leg cramps
  • Lack or loss of strength
  • Mental dullness
  • Palpitations
  • Nervousness
  • Sluggishness
  • Thirst
  • Stomach cramps
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness

It is necessary that your doctor check your progress at regular visits. This allows the doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if you continue taking it.

If your symptoms do not improve within a few days, or if they become worse, you should see your doctor.

Because Domperidone enhances movement in the digestive tract, it may affect the absorption and action of other medications you are taking. It is important that you tell your doctor of any prescription or nonprescription medications you are currently taking, especially monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Do not start or stop any medicine without the approval of your doctor.

For safety concerns, breastfeeding women should not use Domperidone to increase production of breast milk.

You can safely buy Domperidone online at UK Meds. You will need to have first an online consultation with a pharmacist independent prescriber before your order will be supplied. The online consultation will ensure that Domperidone is the right medication for your medical condition.
