Frovatriptan Uses

Frovatriptan is a medication for the relief of the symptoms of migraine headaches. It belongs to a class of medications known as selective serotonin agonists.

Frovatriptan does not prevent future migraine attacks or reduce the number of headaches you have.

For more information on the prescription medication patients should refer to the Frovatriptan patient information leaflet.

Frovatriptan is a selective serotonin agonist. It works by constricting blood vessels around the brain, preventing pain signals from being sent to the brain, and blocking the release of certain natural substances that cause nausea, pain, and other symptoms of a migraine.

Frovatriptan Migraine

The main benefit of using Frovatriptan is the relief it provides on the symptoms of a migraine headache. Frovatriptan effectively narrows the blood vessels in the brain to prevent the sending of pain signals to the brain and to block the release of the natural substances that cause nausea, pain, and its other symptoms.

Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor on how to use this medication. It is important that you read also the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medication package when you fill up your prescription. If you do not understand clearly the instructions on how to use this medication, ask your doctor.

Frovatriptan is to be taken by mouth at the first sign of a migraine, as directed by your doctor. It may be taken with or without a meal but it may work faster when it is taken before a meal. The dosage of this medication is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. If your symptoms do now show any signs of improvement, do not take extra doses of this medication before talking to your doctor.

If the symptoms of your migraine are only relieved on a partial basis, or if your headache comes back, you may take another dose after 2 hours, up to a maximum of 3 doses of 7.5 mg in a 24-hour period.

If you have a higher risk of heart problems, your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking the medication. Your doctor may also ask you to take the first dose of this medication in his office or clinic to monitor for serious side effects.

If you are using medications for migraine attacks 10 or more days each month, the medications may actually make your headaches worse, or what is known as medication overuse headache.

Do not take medications more often or for longer than what is directed by your doctor. Tell your doctor if you feel the need to use the medication more often, or if it is not working as well, or if your headaches get worse.

Frovatriptan 2.5mg

The usual dose of Frovatriptan is one tablet to be taken at the beginning of a migraine attack. You may take a second dose of this medication after 2 hours from the first dose if your migraine relief is partial, or if your headache comes back.

Do not take more than three doses of 7.5 mg tablets in a 24-hour period.

Frovatriptan Side Effects

When you take this medication, flushing, dry mouth, dizziness, or feeling of tingling or numbness may occur. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, call your doctor promptly.

Frovatriptan may raise your blood pressure. You have to check your blood pressure regularly and report to your doctor if the results are high.

Inform your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects, such as blue fingers/toes/nails, hearing changes, cold hands or feet, or mental and mood changes.

This medicine can commonly cause tightness in the chest, jaw, or neck, and pressure that is usually not usually serious. These side effects, however, are similar to the symptoms of a heart attack. Certain medical conditions may increase your risk of heart problems. Let your doctor know if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, family history of heart disease, postmenopausal woman, smoker, or a man over the age of 40.

Your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease increases as you age. Older adults are more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, especially heart problems and increased blood pressure.

The risk of serotonin syndrome may increase if you are taking other medications that increase serotonin.

If you are taking other triptan drugs, you have to make sure that that there is a gap of at least 24 hours of taking Frovatriptan and the other medications that increase serotonin to lessen the chance of serious side effects.
