A Doctor's Overview

GP and surgeon, Dr Shane Charles (MBBS, MRCS, PgDip SEM) provides a simple explanation of the medication below:

'Imigran Nasal Spray (Migraine Nasal Spray) is a medication used for the management of migraine headaches that works by reducing levels of pain signals released from the brain. '.

Imigran nasal spray is prescribed to provide relief to the symptoms of a migraine attack. It is not to be used for the prevention of future migraine attacks. It may also be used for other types of migraine headaches.

Sumatriptan is the active ingredient in Imigran Nasal Spray. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the brain that has become widened, providing relief to the symptoms of a migraine attack. Imigran Nasal Spray is to be administered at the first sign of the symptoms of a migraine headache. It may also be used at any time during a migraine attack. Imigran Nasal Spray should not be used before a migraine attack. It does not prevent future occurrences of a migraine attack.

The main benefit of using Imigran Nasal Spray is the relief it provides from the symptoms of a migraine attack. Imigran Nasal Spray effectively narrows the enlarged blood vessels in the brain to provide relief to the symptoms of a migraine.

Migraine Nasal Spray

Strictly follow the instructions of your doctor on the use of Imigran Nasal Spray. It will help also if you will read first the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with your medicine package when you fill up your prescription. If there is anything that is not clear on the use of the nasal spray, ask your doctor.

It is best to use Imigran Nasal Spray when:

  • A migraine headache begins
  • Other symptoms of a migraine begin, such as vomiting, nausea, or your eyes becoming sensitive to light.

Each Imigran nasal spray is a single dose of the sumatriptan. The spray is composed of three parts:

  • The nozzle - this is the part that should be inserted into your nostril
  • The finger grip - This is to be gripped with your thumb when spraying
  • The blue plunger - To be pressed in order to release the dose of medicine.

Before using the spray, blow your nose gently. Hold the sprayer between your fingers and thumb, but make sure to not press the plunger at once.

Use your other hand to block one nostril by firmly pressing on the side of the nose.

Put the tip of the sprayer into your other nostril as far as it feels comfortable. Keep your head upright and your mouth closed. Be careful to not spray the medicine into your eyes.

Breathe in gently through your nose and press the plunger firmly at the same time.

Keep your head level and remove the tip from your nose.

If your first dose of Imigran Nasal Spray provides relief for your migraine, but a migraine comes back later, you may use another spray, but you must wait at least two hours between using the first and second doses of this medication. Do not use more than 40 mg of Imigran Nasal Spray in any 24-hour period.

If the first spray of the medication did not provide any relief, do not use a second Imigran Nasal Spray or any other form of Imigran. You may take other painkillers as long as they do not contain methysergide or ergotamine. If you are not sure what step to take, ask your doctor.

If your migraine does not get any relief from Imigran Nasal Spray, you may use this medication on another occasion to treat another migraine attack. You can use Imigran Nasal Spray to treat at least three separate migraine attacks before you and your doctor can decide that this medication is not effective for you.

The usual dose of Imigran Nasal Spray is one nasal spray of 10 mg or 20 mg. your doctor will determine the right dose for you.
