Maxalt Melt is used to treat migraines. It belongs to a class of medicines known as selective serotonin 5-HT receptor agonists. The main ingredient of Maxalt Melt is rizatriptan benzoate. It helps in relieving headache, and such other symptoms of a migraine such as vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound or light. Prompt treatment will help you return to your normal routine and decrease your need for other pain medications.

Maxalt Melt will not prevent future migraines or lessen the frequency of your migraine.

Maxalt Melt affects the natural substance serotonin that causes the blood vessels in the brain to become narrow. It may provide pain relief by affecting certain nerves in the brain.

Maxalt Melt Oral Lyophilisate

Before taking Maxalt Melt, read first the patient information leaflet that is provided to you by your pharmacist when you fill up your prescription. Do it each time you get a refill.

Take Maxalt Melt exactly as directed by your doctor, at the first sign of a migraine. Handle Maxalt Melt tablets with dry hands. Place it on your tongue and allow it to dissolve, then swallow with your saliva. There is no need to take this medicine with water or any other liquid. Maxalt Melt may be taken with or without food, but it will work faster when the tablet is taken on an empty stomach.

Do not break or crush the Maxalt Melt tablets. When using the individually wrapped tablets, don’t open the outer pouch until it is time to take the dose. Carefully remove the tablet from the blister pack immediately before you take your dose. If you are using the tablets from a bottle, leave them in the bottle until you are ready for your dose. Keep the bottle tightly closed between uses.

Your dosage of Maxalt Melt is based on your medical condition, your response to treatment, your age, and other medications you may be taking. The dosage for children is based on body weight.

Before you start taking Maxalt Melt, you need to share with your doctor a list of all the products you are using, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products.

If there is no improvement in your symptoms do not take more doses of Maxalt Melt before you talk to your doctor. If your symptoms are partially relieved, or if your headache comes back, adults may take another dose at least 2 hours after the first dose. Children should not take more than one dose, or 5 mg in a 24-hour period. For adults, the maximum dose is 30 mg in a 24-hour period.

Your doctor may perform a heart exam before you start taking this medication if you have a higher risk of heart problems. Your doctor may also direct you to take your first dose of the medication in the office or clinic to monitor for serious side effects. Ask your doctor to explain to you in detail.

If you are taking medications for migraine attacks on 10 or more days every month, the drugs may make your headaches worse, a case of medication overuse headache. Do not use migraine medications more often or for longer than directed. Tell your doctor if you need to use Maxalt Melt more often, or if it is not working as well, or if your headaches get worse.

Maxalt Melt 10mg Oral Lyophilisates

For adults over 18 years of age, the initial dose of Maxalt Melt is 5 or 10 mg, which may be repeated after 2 hours. The maximum dosage for an adult is 30 mg per 24-hour period.

For children between the ages of 6 and 17, the dose of Maxalt Melt is 5 mg in patients weighing less than 40 kg and 10 mg in patients weighing 40 kg or more.

Your doctor has prescribed this medication because he deemed that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many individuals who used this medicine do not experience any serious side effects.

Maxalt Melt Side Effects

The common side effects of Maxalt Melt include:

• Flushing
• Feelings of tingling, numbness, prickling, or heat
• Weakness
• Tiredness
• Dizziness
• Drowsiness

If any of these side effects persist or get worse, tell your doctor immediately.

Maxalt Melt may raise your blood pressure. It is recommended that you check your blood pressure regularly and report to your doctor if the results are high.

Inform your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including blue fingers/toes/nails, hearing changes, cold hands or feet, and mental or mood changes.

Maxalt Melt can commonly cause tightness in the chest, jaw, or neck, pain, and pressure that is usually not serious. These symptoms, however, are similar to the symptoms of a heart attack, which may include chest/jaw/left arm pain unusual sweating or shortness of breath. Get medical help immediately if these or other serious fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe stomach or abdominal pain, signs of a stroke, bloody diarrhoea are experienced.

Maxalt Melt may increase serotonin levels and rarely cause serotonin syndrome, a very serious condition. The risk may increase if you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin, which makes it important that you tell your doctors all the drugs that you are taking. Get medical help right away if you develop the following symptoms:

• Hallucinations
• Fast heartbeat
• Loss of coordination
• Severe nausea or vomiting
• Loss of coordination
• Unexplained fever
• Twitching muscles,
• Unusual agitation or restlessness

A very serious allergic reaction to Maxalt Melt is rare. Get medical help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as rash, itching, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Report to your doctor if you experience any other side effect which you believed to be associated with your use of Maxalt Melt.

Before you start taking Maxalt Melt, let your doctor know if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients, which can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.

Share with your doctor your medical history before starting to take Maxalt Melt, especially of problems with your blood circulation, certain types of headaches, heart problems, liver problems, stroke, or seizures.

Certain conditions may increase your risk of heart problems. Inform your doctor if have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, overweight, postmenopausal if a woman, smoker, or age 40 if a man.

Maxalt Melt may make you dizzy or drowsy. Use of alcohol or marijuana increases your risk of being dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive a vehicle, operate machinery, or do anything that requires alertness until you are sure that you can do the task safely. Limit your intake of alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you use marijuana.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially increased blood pressure and heart problems.

Maxalt Melt should be used during pregnancy only when it is clearly needed. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.

It is not known if Maxalt Melt passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before you start breastfeeding.

Drug interactions may alter how your medications work or may increase your risk of serious side effects. Share with your doctor a list of all the medications you are currently taking before starting your use of Maxalt Melt. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of your medications without getting first the approval of your doctor.
