Zomig is the brand name for Zolmitriptan. It is a medicine designed to treat acute migraine headaches. Zomig is a drug used in treating migraine among adults. It will only treat a migraine headache that has actively started. Zomig will not guarantee the prevention of migraine attacks or reducing the occurrence thereof.  

Zomig belongs to the category of medicines known as ‘Triptans’ or 5-hydroxytryptamine agonists. It is utilized in the treatment of migraines with or without aura or symptoms that occur before the migraine headache attack.

Zomig works by relieving migraine headache attack sufferers by narrowing down the blood vessels found in the brain that causes the pain.

Zomig allows immediate relief for migraine headache patients. It helps by constricting the swollen blood vessels of the brain that affords relief to many patients.

Zomig Tablets

Zomig must be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician. Check the directions found on the product information leaflet found on the packaging of the medicine. Your physician may change your dosage and use of the tablet for best results. Use Zomig only at the onset of migraine headache. You can take the Zomig tablet as a whole with a glass full of water with or without a meal.

The recommended dosage is one tablet 2.5 mg. The tablet is swallowed with a glass full of water. You can take another Zomig tablet if your migraine persists after 2 hours or if it recurs within the next 24 hours. The maximum daily dose of Zomig is 10 mg. Never take a dose more than prescribed by your physician. Do not double a dose if you forget to take Zomig at a given period.

Immediately seek medical assistance if you experience any signs of allergic reactions to Zomig. Stop using Zomig altogether if you have:

  • Signs of an allergic reaction such as swollen face, lips, tongue, hives, and have difficulty breathing
  • Tightness of neck, jaw, or chest
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Heart attack symptoms
  • Chest pains
  • Stomach pains
  • Blood in stool
  • Diarrhoea
  • Hallucinations
  • Drowsiness
  • Feeling exhausted
  • Dry mouth

This is not an exclusive list of Zomig side effects and others can occur. Contact your physician the moment you experience any of the abovementioned side effects.

Stop taking Zomig:

  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you have heart problems
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you have recently had a heart attack
  • If you have had a stroke even if it’s a mild stroke
  • If you have allergies to Zolmitriptan or any of its components
  • If you are taking other medicines for migraine
  • Were told you have Wolff Parkinson White syndrome or abnormal heartbeat.
  • At risk of getting Ischaemic heart ailment which is characterized by poor blood flow in the heart’s arteries.
  • Smoke
  • Have diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Are aged 65 years and up

Stop taking Zomig right away if any of the above conditions apply to you. If you are unsure, check with your doctor before taking the medication.

Should you go to a hospital, tell the medical professionals that you are taking Zomig.

As with other migraine medications, utilizing too much of this medication can cause more headaches or can make your headaches worse. Tell your doctor if you think that this is applicable for you. Patients may need to refrain from taking Zomig to address the problem.

The 2.5 mg tablet has lactose, a certain type of sugar. If you have been advised by your doctor to steer clear of all sugars, ask your doctor first before you take Zomig for your migraine.

Zomig is not to be used by children and those under 18 years old.

Zomig medication can be taken with or without a meal. It does not in any way affect the efficacy of the drug in treating migraine headaches.

Zomig may not be taken by pregnant and breastfeeding women, those who might be pregnant, and even those who have a possibility of becoming pregnant.

Should you be breastfeeding or pregnant, or planning to be one, ask your physician for any advice regarding the medication prior to taking it.

A migraine attack can slow you down. This is also true when operating machinery or if you are driving. Zomig may not impact your alertness when driving or using machinery. But, it can make you feel sleepy or drowsy. Never take it if you are driving or will perform any activity that requires your focus and alertness.

If your migraine attack is not treated by Zomig, or when it becomes worse, contact your physician right away and inform him or your condition. Do not attempt to self-prescribe this medication.
