Can men take fluconazole?

Fluconazole is a medication used to treat several different fungal infections. Patented in 1981, it came into commercial use in 1988 and is listed on the World Health Organisation’s Model List of Essential Medicines. Fluconazole is most frequently used to treat thrush, as it works by stopping the growth of yeast and is usually taken through oral capsules. It can be administered through an injection into a vein, but this is rare. Thrush is a common yeast infection which appears through itching, redness, soreness and swelling. It is important to note that thrush is not a sexually transmitted disease, however it can be greatly aggravated by sexual intercourse and can be transferred to your partner.

Is fluconazole safe?

Fluconazole is highly effective at treating fungal infections and is widely used, but like many medications there are potential side effects that could arise from taking it. It is incredibly important to inform your GP of any persistent or worsening side effects. Past users of Fluconazole have reported experiencing:

• Stomach pains

• A rash

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Headaches

These side effects are common and of no concern. They happen in more than 1 in 100 people taking Fluconazole.

Some reported side effects are more serious, happening in less than 1 in 100 people. If you experience one or more of these side effects, you must call a doctor immediately.

• Fast/irregular heartbeat

• Yellow skin

• Whites of your eyes turning yellow

• Dark urine

• Pale faeces

• Bruising more easily

• Getting infections more easily

It is also possible to get a serious allergic reaction to. If you believe you are suffering an allergic reaction from taking it, please contact your doctor immediately. 

How much Fluconazole should I take?

Fluconazole is sold in single packs containing one 150mg dosage, which should be enough to clear your fungal infection within 7 days. If it doesn’t, it’s very important to contact your doctor for help moving forward. It’s also important to contact your doctor if you take over the recommended dosage or if your symptoms have gotten worse during the 7 days since you took the capsule. If your symptoms clear up but then return after the 7 days, you can take another 150mg dosage – provided you did not suffer from any serious side effects or allergic reaction during the first cycle of treatment. If you have more than two bouts of thrush or any fungal infection within a 6 month period, it is important to contact your doctor and you should avoid a third dosage of Fluconazole in a short time period.

Who can take Fluconazole?

Regardless of gender or age, most adults can take Fluconazole! It can also be prescribed for children and babies if a doctor deems it necessary and if it would prove effective.

However, Fluconazole is not suitable for everyone and you must tell a doctor before you take it if you have any of the following:

• Previously had an allergic reaction to Fluconazole or any other medication

• Kidney or liver problems

• Had a blood test which said you have an abnormal level of calcium, magnesium or potassium

• Heart disease including arrythmia
